Alright so here's some food for thought about the importance of Dorne and the Martells in the overarching world of A Song of Ice and Fire and why HBO sucked donkey Dick by scraping the Dornish Plot.
The first thing that should be known about the Martells and Dorne is that of the Seven Kingdoms they were the only kingdom to be brought in do to Marriage and thus were never conquered nor did they bend the knee. They also were the only Kingdom allowed to keep their titles as they were seeing as Prince is not a higher title than King. On top of all of that, the Dornish law states that the oldest inherits no matter their gender so the Ruler could be a Prince or a Princess.
The next thing about the Dornish and in particular the Martells is that Lewis Martell was a Kingsguard and Elia Martell married Rhaegar. It was said that Elia was ill and yet she gave birth to two healthy children, Rhaenys and Aegon. While pregnant with Aegon, she was dishonored and humiliated at the Tourny at Harrenhall by her husband who crowned Lyanna Stark as the Queen of Love and Beauty.
The Rebellion happened and Elia and her children are killed in the most brutal way imaginable by the Mountain on Tywin's orders. Now fast forward to current events in the books, which has the full extent of Dornish intrigue, With Arieanna(sp?), believing her father was overlooking her for the Dornish throne decides to make Myrcella queen as she was older than Tommen, with Quintan sent to Dany with the offer of his hand. Ellaria in the books doesn't go hell-bent on revenge for Oberyn's death.
The thing about the Martells is that they are the flip side of the coin to the Starks. Where Starks thrive in the icy cold of the North, Martells flourish in the burning sands of Dorne. Both had lost a sister in a previous generation to the Targaryen Prince. Both Houses have their form of Honor which they hold steadfast too even at death's door.
