In the last few days I've been seeing this post floating around that names Jon Snow Aegon the VIII.
And it really really pisses me off. Because clearly the show fans (And likely D&D) dont understand how naming in the 'Verse. Which the X of their name does not apply until a person ascends the throne/named ruler.
Case in point Rheager's son Aegon became Aegon VI in those short moments between Aery's death and his own "death" (assuming Young Griff is in fact Aegon) while Aery's son Aegon, who died less then a year after his birth is... simply Aegon. And not Aegon VI.
But Revan! Rheager's son by Elia was never crowned! Youre right! In neither the show or books was he crown! But neither was Dany's brother Viserys and he was Viserys III as their mother Rhaella declared him King on Dragonstone early in their exile which is how he became known as the Begger King, instead of the Begger Prince.
But Revan! D&D made it so Rheager annulled his marriage to Elia, which means his first two children are now bastards!
As much as I hate this, this is also correct and fuck those two assholes for doing this. However, this means that in show canon at best Jon would then be Aegon VI. NOT Aegon VIII.
One of the many issues I have with this whole thing is that "the Dragon needs three heads" Annulment kinda throws a wrench in this. And given that Rheager had a hard on for this prophecy and the prince that was promised this really seems counter productive.
HOWEVER! All this is mute as even though Rheager married Lyanna Stark, no where, in any of those records Gilly and Sam found did it name Jon as Rheager's son. His only proof of his parentage is the visions of his brother/cousin Bran and the word of Howland Reed, whom wouldnt be seen as a impartial/unbiased witness and his credibility would normally be called into question expect its D&D and Jon must have all the nice things.
Actually there were... nine Targaryens who bore the name Aegon since the doom, not including the son of Aery II, or Rheager and Elia, yet there has only been five who have worn the crown of Westeros which is why Aegon V was the last to have a number attached to his name. D&D/Show Fans are applying loose real world naming conventions to the 'verse obviously. And they are doing it poorly because if thats now naming worked. Jon would actually be Aegon XII.
Further proof of this is that Viserys is third of his name, and not fourth of his name, given that Aegon I had a grandson name Viserys (brother of Jaehaerys I) 3-4 generations(depending how you count them) before Viserys I.
And Dany is Daenerys I, even though we know there was another Daenerys not that many generations back who married into the House Martell.
Whats your point Revan?
My point? My point is fuck D&D and show only fans. This is why I use Jaehearys as Jon's "Targaryen" name. Because while I hate the Young Giff storyline in the books, I will not allow this fucking dumpster fire to erase Elia and her children.
