So, according to Dumb&Dumber, foreshadowing means absolute truth even if introduced a minute before the actual event. Character development and cohesive storytelling? What's that? Foreshadowing is the way to go!
Around 1:11 mark.
'Who are you marrying this time?' 'I don't know. Maybe No One.'
That's it. Case closed. Daenerys married Arya, nothing bad happened, they gay ruled together. THE FORESHADOWING TOLD SO.
someone fic this! daenerys marrying arya to get the north's support. bread snow who? arya is the true stark!

Dumb & Dumber were not taught that 'foreshadowing' does not equal character development, in fancy writer's school

Exactly! Though, the most infuriating part for me is not those two, it's the GoT diehard fans who say shit like 'look it's foreshadowed IT MAKES SENSE'. The majority realised that the show was run by absolute fucking idiots, even if it took them the dumpster fire of season 8 to finally acknowledge it, there are still those who think D&D were godsent and actually think that's how storytelling works.
I try not to let it bother me, but I just can't believe how low today's standard is for media. This 'shock factor and subverting expectations' trend needs to die in a fire. The most shocking thing today is a story that actually makes sense.

God right? Can the 'shock value' thing just die. Everyone's so worried about doing things that are unexpected or not done before they forget that even if we know what's going to happen, we still enjoy it. Hell, look at children's movies, there are amazing stories there and they are all predictable. We know the hero/heroine will save the day or get the girl or whatever but the story there is still worth the ride.

Exactly! And it was GoT (or should I say ASOIAF) that started this trend. But it started with Ned's execution and 'The Red Wedding' (to name a few), moments and twists that came naturally, as part of the whole narrative and direct character actions.
The moment I learnt that D&D wanted to do the show for the 'Red Wedding' it all clicked into place. They are not interested in storytelling, they are interested in the 'WOW factor' and thinking themselves clever by 'subverting expectations'. They did it well while they had something to leach off. After season 4, they thought they could come up with their own 'shocks', but all they did is show themselves highly inadequate to anyone with more than one brain cell.
Now, every fucking tv show and movie is trying the edgy, shocking twist trope. Thinking the audience wants that. We do, if it makes sense and is a part of a cohesive story. Not for cheap thrills.
Also, when did the end of a story become the most important part??? Like you said, it's the ride that matters, not the 'shocking' destination.
(I'm sorry for the rant. I'm just... full of rage.)

Well, my fancy scriptwriting class taught me about the plant and payoff.
“I’m not a Lady, I’m a Wolf!” "He who fights with monsters should be careful lest he thereby become a monster. And if thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee." The tormentor becomes the tormented. People become what they love and hate, because their mind focuses on it."
Well, my fancy scriptwriting class taught me about the plant and payoff.
Never been to fancy script writing class so won't know about plant and payoff so have no opinion on that. I Kinda was told, write a script about this, filming in two weeks, have a nice weekend.

By the end of season 6, I was already reeling from the crippling poison of D&D and this comment had flown completely over my head until prplmunky sent me a joyful e-mail about it later that night. It gave our little community some hope.

This is something that takes some serious skill to pull off properly. I can't emphasize enough that D&D do not have this skill.. or any creative skill whatsoever. Translation of an existing work to a different media does require a bit of effort, but so does warming the 'beef' patties in the oily drawer at McDonald's.
..at least with McDonald's I know up front that I'm paying for garbage.

Such sweet summer children we were back then.
That's the beauty of fanfiction. Pick and choose the parts you wanna take and forgetting the rest. Now, in my head Daenerys marries No One and nothing can change my mind. 'Canon' is just some drunk's imagination running wild.
If that didn't tip anyone off, maybe the excited flailing while hyping the importance of a ZOMBIE POLAR BEAR managed drive the point home.
Oh my god, yes, that was a thing that happened! Shit, I repressed so much GoT nonsense. Good thing, otherwise I don't know how I could possibly keep my already poor nerves intact. Also, so much for the importance of it if forgotten quicker than it appeared.

I thank the god I don't believe in every day for not being a Star Wars fan. I can't imagine what those people are feeling right now, knowing these two simpletons are in charge of their beloved series. If any are reading, I'm so sorry you guys *sending comforting hugs your way*
Also, now I'm glad I never payed a cent for this show. I felt bad at the beginning, but since the hacks butchered it, I don't feel bad for hacking their show.

Pretty damn close to reality! I don't think anyone at all would disagree that in the end, GoT became fanfiction. Bad fanfiction. The kind that makes you cringe as you read it and slink back into your chair filled with embarrassment for whoever wrote dem words and thought they were worth sharing publicly.

Don't lose one moment's sleep over it. You were just clever enough to 'subvert expectations' and avoid theft.

Oh, the second-hand embarrassment... is there a feeling more gross and unnerving than that?!
An acquaintance of mine and I were talking about the wonderful greatness that was season 8. As two Arya fans we managed to put together no less than 12 fixes for the last three episodes just for her while also drinking beer, quoting bull Durham, and predicting the ufc fights.
His wife, stupid Jon Snow fangirl, agreed with about 10 of our fixes, but still complained about Jon not killing the NK.
So half drunk rambling was better than 2 years of script development by professionals according to our one person audience. That's 100% fan score on rotten tomatoes, so we gladly accept the Emmy for best writing.

I think that's the biggest problem of all - the wasted potential. GoT started great cause it had great original material to follow. It was a massive success and D&D took it as their own greatness acknowledged, while all they did is adapt. Hubris hit and they thought themselves geniuses. The rest is shitshow history.
Speaking of Emmys for writing, did you hear those two fuckwits submited finale for best writing?! The script they wrote, exactly 5% of it dialogue (shit dialogue, must be stated), while the rest was melodramatic walking and staring. I mean... you gotta laugh at this point. Otherwise, I'd think I'd sell everything I own, fly to the US and slap them stupid.
P.S. The only thing I liked about season 8 was Jon NOT killing the Night King. Bonus points for it being Arya, but anyone else I would have accepted. Jon? I fucking hate that guy. I never particularly liked Book!Jon, the whole 'tortured poor orphan boy who is actually THE HERO' - I am soo over it. It's the same reasoning behind me not liking Harry Potter as a character. I like the world and characters around it all, but that trope I cannot relate to at all and am frankly sick of it. Show Jon? Fucking emo idiot who has more luck than sense.

the dragon queen shot was cool. Actually liked her speech to the dothraki and unsullied, but the other 76 minutes was pure bullshit.
And apparently D&D didn't like GRRM making tyrion a self insert, so made Jon their self insert. How else do you explain making horrible decisions at every turn and things always working out

The dragon wings shot and the speech were cool. But, cool if you take out the context. With context it all seems too... führer-esque. D&D are as subtle as a fart in a library.
The bolded part - exactly! I wouldn't explain it any other way than life imitates 'art'. Or is it the other way around? Anyways, Jon truly is their perfect little stupid mirror.
Welcome~ This forum is a place for all Dany x Arya shippers to meet up and discuss the world, the lore, and the wonderful characters who make this ship! Have fun, everyone!
