So.. it's that time of year again. Time to enjoy rum and eggnog after work, time to stare at flickering colored lights through heavy lids, and time to consider where you are and where you are going.

House Danarya, what were your 2017 struggles? What are your new year's resolutions for 2018?

One of mine has taken a lot of wrestling with a powerful set of Nostalgia Glasses.
Over the last two months, I have been selling off my retro gaming collection.

I had never intended to become a collector - it's just that I bought things throughout the years, and kept them. That's all. I never knew at the time that the unstoppable combo of Wii Virtual Console + Youtube Retro Gamers would actually create a bloody industry out of OUTDATED RELICS. What was once a fantastic, fun, and CHEAP hobby has become a fucking douchebag nerd e-peen competition, and I want no part of it. When I see a grown ass, middle aged man (or woman) opening a game cart with an authentic Nintendo Gamebit Screwdriver to squint and check serial numbers of ROM chips to verify 'authenticity' of a $50 game, like it's some kind of Picasso treasure, my entire soul cringes.

Fuck you nerds with your flailing little buggy-whip arms and your scalped Super Mario cereal (and, no, I'm not kidding about the cereal.. that's how bad things have gotten).

So all of the retro stuff is going. In fact, at least half of my entire collection is going. 'Cause my priorities are changing, and there's not enough hours in the day to entertain two extremely time-consuming hobbies.

For 2018, I want to seriously commit to reading/writing much more. And to do that, I need... less shelves stacked with Game-Buying Guilt staring down at me. I love gaming, and I'll always be a gamer. But I will no longer be a 'collector' - because as far as I'm concerned, that's become a real dirty word at this point.

And part of my commitment to reading is not only the 140+ books I have sitting on a shelf + Kindle, waiting, bought and paid for, but also all of the good fanfiction I've been neglecting. So in 2018, I will be starting some long overdue Fic reviews here in House Danarya.

Also, thanks to a brilliant suggestion from Munky, I'm considering a book club.. would anyone be interested?

Ookay big questions. My 2017 was settling into a new University for my Bachelor's and trying not to lose my mind as I try to structure the five semesters (hopefully) that it will take to get my darn degree and finding out how many of my classes that the this University won't take from my community college I got my associate's from.. Just no time to do much of anything but study, eat, work, and maybe sleep for a little while (all the while popping here occasionally to get my fic fix). Now that finals are over and this semester is done I will be working far more the rest of the year and till my new semester starts.

For 2018 my goal is to write at least two more scripts and film several short films. I would also love to have some regular chunk of time to write the fic I talked myself into writing for House Danarya. So here is hoping for a less stressful year or at least a more productive year with writing.

2017 Struggles were real.
I know in the House, we do tend not talk about politics and/or religion. But you cant mention the last year without thinking about the shit show that is the US Politics and the Great Moldy Yam sitting in the White House.

And the actual fucking Nazis marching in the streets. Because thats a thing now.

But on a personal level. 2017.... was a bit of a shit show.

I fucked up my wrist badly, and now nearing a year later its still not 100%, though it is considerably better. At least I am no longer wearing some sort of a brace 90% of the time. - I ended up having to quit that job in an attempt to save my wrist, and also finding out how shitty the health system is locally.
Of course, since I fucked up my right wrist, (and I'm right handed) I suddenly was faced with the realization that I couldnt do the things I loved. No more sword fighting, no more archery, no more art. The depression was real and soul crushing. However I fought back.
I started to learn how to sew. And once my wrist allowed me to go without the full brace long enough to use the computer, I turned my attention to writing again. Thus, Frosted Faith rose from the ashes.
I also turned my attention to the House, redirecting my passions into rekindling the fire in the hearth.

Then I got a new job at a gas station. And oh boy was that a mistake. That place was fucked up. I dont even want to get into it. But needless to say, if Cersei Lannister was desperate for a job, I would tell her not to apply there, because its that shitty. I ended up getting fired because I choose the health and well being of my 19 year old coworker over the store. I have no regrets.

I bummed around for a month or so. Then as you all know, August was very busy, with temp jobs and volunteer work followed by my annual get-a-way. Faeireworlds (Which, prplmunky and @starky I think you'd both enjoy) To say nothing about how I started and finished the 30,000 word Red Blossoms in less then a month. Which holy shit, I'm surprised my keyboard didnt catch fire. And I know Munky lost sleep over the thought of my poor abused wrist.

Annnnd then that depression I managed to fight back in the Spring decided to come bite me in the ass. Which, you win some, you lose some I guess.

However, I did get a new job, and its a job I like, so thats great. And I even have money saved up at this point. So personally I'll finish 2017 better then I began it.

For 2018.

I dont really do resolutions. However, goal wise....

I want to finish Book 1 of Frosted Faith.
Take more trips. Not so much big trips (Although I plan to go see my sister in January) but little trips to places in Oregon I some how havent been to despite living here my whole life.
Continue gaining the experience I need to potentially build this bartending thing. Because there is no advancement potential at my current job. And I would eventually like to not work weekends. (So I can do more SCA events)
Continue to learn how to sew. Learn other new things.
Read more actual books.
Potentially stop toeing the line of Paganism....? Maybe...?

Also, as far as the book club thing goes. I'm totally down. I could at least give good recommendations?
