WORK IN PROGRESS BECAUSE THERES JUST SO MANY D=
The world of ASOIAF/GOT is filled with prophecies, greendreams and portants. Indeed at the very heart of the series there is one about a Promised Prince. As fans we speculate upon these things, the meaning of the portents, we pick apart the prophcies line by line, word by word, searching for meaning and symbolisim just as the characters do. We as fans also try to figure out which have been fufilled and which have not, or how they might be fufilled, if they are at all.
Those among us who are writers, often use the these gems from the 'Verse for our own machinations.
This thread is two fold. It is to provide a comprehensive list of all know Prophecies, Portents or Dreams from the 'Verse, the who and the when it was said. And a place to discuss these things, offer our own interpitations of them, debate rather or not they have come to frutations and otherwise have a fucking blast with the bullshit that is prophecy.
Bare in mind that I will only be listing that which appares within and relates to the series. So if theres a prophecy or such from the 'Verse but doesnt connect to the series youre free to bring it up along with the source of it for discussion.
Portents:
A Dead Direwolf, and Stag and Six Orphen Pups: The very first Portent of the series was a massive foreshadow. A direwolf female killed by a Stag, who was dead beside her, and the discovery of six orphen pups. This needs no explanation, as the events that this forshadowed has long come to past.
The Red Comet: Every faction, every major character had their own interpitation for the bleeding star that suddenly appeared in the sky and remained there for some time. I think Osha said it best "Stars dont fall for men". The comet did appare right after Dany hatched her 'children' after all.
Daenerys Targaryen:
There are many prophecies and the like surrounding Dany. So much so she gets her own section in this thread. And she herself has experienced prophetic dreams.
Before her wedding to Khal Drogo she had one such dream. "Her thighs were slick with blood. She closed her eyes and whimpered. As if in answer, there was a hideous ripping sound and the crackling of some great fire. When she looked again, Viserys was gone, great columns of flame rose all around, and in the midst of them was the dragon"
In hindsight (as isnt that how all prophecies and portents work?) this is clearly her miscarriage/stillbirth, the great fire is the pryre she burns Drogo, her horse and MMD on, and obviously the 'birth' of her dragons
Of course, none can forget Mirri Maz Duur's (MMD's) haunting prophecy:
"When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east. When the seas go dry and mountains blow in the wind like leaves. When your womb quickens again, and you bear a living child. Then he will return, and not before"
Indeed, this one is so unforgetable for our little corner of fandom, that prplmunky 's fanfiction is basically built around it. So if there is anyone here who has take this one apart word for word it would be her.
Quaithe:
Speaking of unforgetable. Theres Quaithe, a 'shadowbinder' from Asshai. One thing thats noteworthy about this is that she makes an appearance three times, but only once in person. The timing other two occasions differ between books and show.
The first time is in Qarth, the scene plays out as follows:
"To go north, you must go south. To reach the west, you must go east. To go forward you must go back, and to touch the light you must pass beneath the shadow."
Asshai, Dany thought. She would have me go to Asshai. "Will the Asshai'i give me an army?" she demanded. "Will there be gold for me in Asshai? Will there be ships? What is there in Asshai that I will not find in Qarth?"
"Truth," said the woman in the mask.
The second time is either On board the ship Balerion (In Asapor) or after Dany has flown off on Drogons back,
"No. Hear me, Daenerys Targaryen. The glass candles are burning.
Soon comes the pale mare, and after her the others. Kraken and dark flame, lion and griffin, the sun's son and the mummer's dragon. Trust none of them. Remember the Undying. Beware the perfumed seneschal."
The third time is either a dream or a hallucination, but either way its while she is lost in the Dothraki Sea.
First she repeats her first warning. “To go north, you must journey south. To reach the west, you must go east. To go forward, you must go back. To touch the light you must pass beneath the shadow.”
Then “Remember who you are, Daenerys, ... The dragons know. Do you?”
The House of the Undying offered up many visions and prophecies to and about Dany. What she is shown differences between books and show.
In the show:
The Charred remains of the throne room of the Red Keep. The roof collapsed and everything around the Iron Throne is Covered in Snow. (If I recall correctly, she hears a child's cry and turns away)
She emerges from the Wall in a snow storm and then enters a tent, in which she finds Drogo and their son Rhaego. She turns and leaves.
In the Books, she is shown a great deal more.
A beautiful, naked woman being ravished by four little men who resemble the dwarf servitor.
A feast of slaughtered corpses holding cups, spoons, and food, with a dead man with a wolf's head sitting on a throne wearing an iron crown, apparently foreshadowing the Red Wedding.
Daenerys' childhood home with the red door in Braavos.
A throne room with dragon skulls on the walls where a king resembling Aerys II Targaryen sits on a barbed throne and appears to give the order to burn the Red Keep during the Sack of King's Landing.
A room where a silver-haired man (presumably Rhaegar Targaryen) names his son Aegon, says the child is "the prince that was promised", then plays a harp.
A "splendor of wizards" who falsely claim to be the Undying of Qarth and offer to teach Daenerys the secret speech of dragonkind.
They give her a prophecy/warning. I personally call it the Prophecy of Three. But it goes as follows:
"Three fires must you light...one for life, and one for death and one for love. Three Mounts must you ride... one to bed and one to dread and one to love... three reasons will you know, once for blood, and once for gold and once for love."
She is shown even more:
Viserys Targaryen's gruesome death.
A tall lord with copper-skin and silver-gold hair beneath a banner of a fiery stallion, with a burning city in the background (this may be a glimpse at what Rhaego's future would have been).
A dying prince (likely Rhaegar Targaryen) mutters a woman's name with his last breath, rubies flying from his chest.
A blue-eyed king who casts no shadow (possibly Stannis Baratheon) raises a red sword in his hand.
A cloth dragon sways on poles amidst a cheering crowd.
A great stone beast takes wing from a smoking tower, breathing shadows.
Daenerys's silver trots through grass to a darkling stream under a sea of stars.
A corpse standing at the prow of a ship with bright eyes and grey smiling lips.
A blue flower growing from a chink in a wall of ice, filling the air with sweetness.
Stallion Who Mounts The World
A Dothraki prophecy made after Dany eats a raw horse's heart while pregnant with Rhaego, her son whom its believed to be this Stallion. But given that he died in the womb....
"As swift as the wind he rides, and behind him his khalasar covers the earth, men without number, with arakhs shining in their hands like blades of razor grass. Fierce as a storm this prince will be. His enemies will tremble before him, and their wives will weep tears of blood and rend their flesh in grief. The bells in his hair will sing his coming, and the milk men in the stone tents will fear his name. The prince is riding, and he shall be the stallion who mounts the world"
Melisandre:
Munky has worked so hard on her 'Goodness of Melisandre' quest, but I think it ended when we all found out she was a 400+ year old hag with a clever glamour (what has been seen, can not be unseen). Disturbing imagery aside, this crazy lady in red has offered up many prophecies and visions since her appearance and has been at the center of the whole Azor Ahai/Prince that was Promise gig -which I will get to in its own section- While the Red Woman tends to get details wrong, more often then not her visions do come true in some shape or form. (That is the nature of the beast here)
Among the lesser visions she has had includes
"I have seen your sister in my fires, fleeing from this marriage they have made for her. Coming here, to you. A girl in grey on a dying horse, I have seen it plain as day. It has not happened yet, but it will."
"It is not the foes who curse you to your face that you must fear, but those who smile when you are looking and sharpen their knives when you turn your back. You would do well to keep your wolf close beside you. Ice, I see, and daggers in the dark. Blood frozen red and hard, and naked steel.
Melisandre crosses paths with Arya when the Brotherhood without Banners sells Gendry to the Red Priestess. Before she parts, she offers Arya a dark prophecy.
"I see a darkness in you. And in that darkness, eyes starring back at me. Brown eyes, blue eyes, green eyes. Eyes you'll shut forever." - "We will meet again"
In Season 7, after arranging Jon and Dany to meet on Dragon Stone (Gag), Varys and Melisandre have a little chat, during which Varys warns the Red Woman that she should not return to Westeros, and she replies with dark words.
"I will return, dear Spider, one last time" she said. "I have to die in this strange country -- Just like you."
Patchface:
Fuck this nutty meatbag. (not literally), personally I found his rhymes to be disturbing, and when looking back and them, also prophetic in nature thus why I'm including them in this thread. There are a great number of theories surrounding the mad court jester and fool that follows Shireen Baratheon around. some of his rhymes are as followed.
"The shadows come to dance, my lord, dance my lord, dance my lord. The shadows come to stay, my lord, stay my lord, stay my lord."
"Under the sea, smoke rises in bubbles, and flames burn green and blue and black. I know, I know, oh, oh, oh"
"Fool's blood. King's blood, blood on the maiden's thigh, but chains for the guests and chains for the bridegroom, aye, aye, aye"
"In the dark the dead are dancing. I know, I know, oh oh oh."
