Ah man, so many good books to read. My bread and butter growing up was Tamara Pierce but it’s been a while since I read that. Mostly I’ve been reading business related books and semi-self help ones. Like “the subtle art of not giving a fuck” by Mark Mason. It’s very consistent with what I do at work so I really like it. Also Cruical Conversations by Kerry Patterson. I recommend it to pretty much every couple I see.
The E-Myth revisited and Smarter, Faster, Better are really good business mindset books.
Oh, I did read “Emily Monroe is Not the Chosen One” recently. It’s a pretty quick not-a-superhero book. Looking forward to reading the sequel (when I get around to it)

I like how so many of us have read Tamara Pierce.
Which makes me wonder how many caught the easter egg in Frosted Faith xD

*Smirks* ... wait now I have to go reread it to make sure I did get it.
“I’m not a Lady, I’m a Wolf!” "He who fights with monsters should be careful lest he thereby become a monster. And if thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee." The tormentor becomes the tormented. People become what they love and hate, because their mind focuses on it."

I’m pretty sure I missed it on the first read through.
Bumping this thread up because I just finished 'The First Law' trilogy by Joe Abercrombie and I have some FEELINGS.
Has anyone else read it?
It was highly recommended to me. A must-read for all ASOIAF fans, they said. It's the best thing since GRRM's work, they said. Complex world and even more complex characters, they said. Epic fantasy at its finest, they said.
Well, they lied.
For those who might have read it, what did you think about it? For those that haven't, from the bottom of my heart, stay away from it if you thought about reading it. Yes, we all have different tastes and all look for different things, but I think only the biggest cynics and edgelords would enjoy this torture. NO ONE TOLD ME IT WAS GRIMDARK SHIT! GRRM is a lot of things, but I wouldn't call him nihilistic.
Can't believe I wasted months on this crap. Sticking with it hoping the AWESOMENESS everyone talked about would come. It doesn't. It's a pity, cause the guy can write. The plot kept my interest, but it was quite sad when I realised I didn't actually care about any of the characters. In fact, I fucking hated them all by the end.
Oh yeah, there's barely any women in it. And those that are there... one dimensional, zero agency puppets. Also, do not even get me started on what happens to ONE (1) LGBT character!! I think that one part made me hate the series, instead of just being indifferent about it.
Okay, rant over. Again, if anyone else has read it, I would love to hear what you thought about it! Did you enjoy it or are you, like me, sick and tired of this 'must be realistic, nothing matters, the world is an awful place ran by monsters' shit?

-takes a seat and just sighs- ...it's moments like this that I wish I hadn't given up drinking.
So, like you I was suckered into The First Law trilogy with personal recommendations combined with the support of high reviews. Also, Grimdark. I actually enjoy Grimdark when it's done well; 'cause I'm a misanthrope and generally think the world is pretty fucked and most people are wretched. Pretty easy sell for me, Amazon got my money and I got my books.
I read the first one. The first third of that first book intrigued me. This has potential, I thought to myself as I kept turning the pages. By the end of that book, I was thoroughly bored and didn't love anyone. The early promise I saw was a mirage; I was left staggering and starving in a lie that appeared to be a refreshing oasis from a distance. To this day the other two sit unread on my shelf, gathering dust.

I'm ok with the world is awful and run by monsters if the rest is interesting. -sighs again- Seems that is too much to ask for, though.
To be completely honest, I've really struggled to love books and reading in general again after ASOIAF. I want to lose myself in another series. I want a narrative filled with characters that capture my interest to make me fall in love with words again. I want to remember how a deep sense of satisfaction when turning a final page feels.
I've tried. I have about 150 unread books between my shelf and Kindle, and I've given a few other series an honest go, determined. I have not been successful yet.
I've enjoyed a few reads on a casual level, but nothing has really gripped my heart.
Seems like in the end I have the same problem with books as I do with women. Fall hard for the wrong ones and never really recover XD
The artist formerly known as starkyd7. Patron saint of lost fucking causes.

Are we the same person?? I too stopped drinking after high school (yeah, we start young here) and man... if there was a moment to pick up again, it was after finishing this shit. Also, I too subscribe to misanthorpe philosophy, to a point. I hate people generally, but I love people individually. Love a human, hate a group. I forgot who said that, but it's true. So, again like you, I'm okay with and like Grimdark, but not to THIS point! Where not only the world is fucked up beyond belif, but every.single.individual. too. I am aware of what the world is, I don't need it in my fantasy lit too!

Friendly advice, leave them to their dust. It had potential, it had intrigue and it held my attention. And I KEPT HOPING it would start up. But it absolute DID NOT deliever in any aspect. There was no payoff, no satisfaction and no lesson learned. And I did not care about any of them either and trust me, if you continued you would only end up hating them all.
Ooooh, you finished all three then? Slogged through with that sweet ray of hope shining ever onward? Brave soul. You deserve your anger spotlight now.
So, listen to how stupid I am - I am currently reading the fourth book.
But only because it has a female protagonist. 'Best Served Cold' is called and it's in the same world, but not with original characters. I'm about 200 pages in and it's okay so far. I love a good revenge story and love women getting that revenge, so I put on my clown makeup and am back on the 'hope' cart.

That's the thing - it's only that! There is no rest. The world is awful, but the characters are also awful too. So you don't care as you read from their POV, in fact, you hate them and everything around them. Here's an example, if you have no interest in reading for yourself:
Jezal becomes King and Glokta becomes Arch Lector of the Inquisition. Jezal marries Terez of Talins, who hates his guts and won't fuck him. Turns out, Terez is a lesbian who is in a relationship with her lady-in-waiting. Glokta finds out, arrests her lover and forces Terez to enthusiastically fuck Jezal every night for a week or he'll kill her lady. Says he will release her once Terez has given Jezal two sons and two daughters.
AND WE'RE SUPPOSED TO CARE FOR THIS FUCKING MONSTER?? Jezal is just a fucking idiot who has no idea what's happening, so I did not hate him. He's just frustrating because you think he has grown and become a better person, but he reverts right back to an arrogant asshole once he is given a sliver of power. But Glokta?? He can fuck right off and die in a fire. His whole arc is - poor me, I am crippled and tortured so now I cripple and torture others because.... because. And everything just fucking works out for him, while he ruins everyone around him.
