Uhh. So After years and years of everyone telling me I should go to college, I decided to do just that this last fall. And I know its not because I'm not intelligent or anything of the sort, but rather I think maybe academia just isnt for me. So I'm doing some research to decide rather or not I really actually need a degree to do what I want to do, or if just keeping on with commissions, and independently learning different programs and shit and gaining experience is a better use of my time and energy.
Because holy shit, has college been a massive source of stress and pressure and my failures a major source of depression these last two terms. I enjoyed college, at least the art classes, but the pressure of needing to make grade, has just been killer. And then theres the fact that maybe I'm too much of a independent thinker to actually do well acedemicly because I get frustraited when my teachers go "Oh, this is great, really, but see, you failed to do this this and this. And it doesnt matter that you dont use outlines because thats not how your brain works, its required you fill this outline out." And I'm just like, banging my head against the wall.
So ya. spending the summer trying to decide rather or not I actually need to go back to college this summer.
I am going to give some advice here that.. I know will be divisive.
But I'm probably older than most here, and have some experience, so hear me out.
I think whether or not you should attend college/university depends entirely on what you really want to do. I know that the general answer these days is 'get educated'. And, there is some truth to that. But we're living in a world where education guarantees NOTHING. How many university grads are currently working at McDonalds? They can't find a job in their chosen field. They are in debt up to their eyeballs, and despite doing the 'right thing', they're no better off than someone who didn't spend one day in a post-secondary institution.
It's one thing to have this happen if you come from a wealthy family who is paying for your education. Then, even if you don't find work in your profession for a while, it's not such a big deal - you don't have a fiscal noose around your neck.
But for those of us who don't have a silver spoon, we have to be a lot more careful. We have no 'bailout'. This is it.
Only get the education you -need- to do what you aspire to do. You can always get more later, upgrade, etc - but if you are unsure now, or if you don't need it for what you currently what to do, don't spend the money on it. Because you'll be paying it back for -years- otherwise.
-dodges the rotting fruit and vegetables inevitably being thrown by Academia-

I did some light research, looking at the job requirements for a artist at major studios like Bioware, Bethesda, Ubisoft, Blizzard, CD Project Red, Pixar, Disney, Dreamworks, ect. And most just require 2+ years EXPERIENCE, and want you to know programs X, Y, and Z.
So initial research saids.. No, I dont need a degree to do what I want. Take a few classes to learn to programs maybe. But I dont need a degree.
Thankfully, I did these last 3 terms without taking out loans. so I currently have Zero student debt.
I live in the same location as BioWare headquarters, and I've seen their postings for a few years. It's always harping on experience/portfolio far more than 'DO YOU HAVE AN UNRELATED DEGREE JUST FOR THE SAKE OF HAVING IT ARAGAHAHAHA'

I some times forget your canadian. And... I'm gonna guess Albertian at that.
I've seen a lot of advice, especially for artists, that say that getting a degree isn't really worth it, especially if you have a specific focus on what kind of art you want to do. You can go for getting "well rounded" but if you really want to master a certain kind of art, an art degree is going to waste your time and money with a lot of things you don't necessarily want or need to learn and then only scratch the surface of things you want to be really good at. I've several tumblr posts with references to more specific classes and such that don't necessarily get you a degree but help you learn the specifics of what you want and need to know, for art programs, techniques, etc, and if you'd like I can dig them up.

Yes. please do dig them up.
One of the things I was going to look up this summer is what schools in the state offer relevent classes. I have a car, I have no issues traveling to take a class that is actually useful and relevant.
to take a class that is actually useful and relevant.
And this part is so key. Post Secondary is all about the $$$. They'll try to have you acquiring new pieces of stamped paper -forever-, because They Want All Your Money.
Here's a list of online resources. Here's a list of youtube channels for digital artists. I have a drawing reference tag for random tips and techniques that I'm always adding to as well, if that's something you're interested in.

Yeah.. I promise though, that I don't say 'eh'.
And that Canadian accent? That's maritime provinces, and Saskatchewan/Manitoba. I talk like a real person And I can read gud, too!
Maritime and Saskatchewan/Manitoba accents are different though ya? The latter is more of what us americans would call a Minnesota accent. And if I remember right. West to east, the provinces go BC > Alberta > Saskatchewan > Manitoba > Ontario > Qubeck > NewBrunswick > Nova Socia > Prince Edward Island(This isnt a provaince is it? isnt it apart of Nova Socia?)> NewfoundLand.... then then I can never remember the northern ones. Beyond Yukon which boarders Alaska, and the Northern Territories which takes up like half of the rest of canada. and then something that starts with a N.... Its something First Nationer.
In any case, I know not all canadians say EH, or have a funny "canadian" accent, or live in a igloo, or bath in maple syrup.
